When most people think of Yorkshire they will probably picture wild moor land, rolling hills and of course Yorkshire puddings, yet one landmark we tend to overlook is Yorkshires many fine historic houses. The area has a plethora of historic houses that allow us a take a glimpse into a way of life that does not really exist anymore.

Sewerby Hall and Gardens in Bridlington is positioned on the cliff tops and has a wide range of craft and art displays, as well as an orangey and award winning garden.

Beningborough Hall found near York houses some of the best Baroque interiors in the UK as well as having beautiful gardens.

Castle Howard located near York is a stunning baroque visions created by John Vanbrugh. The house has paintings by Rubens and Gainsborough, while outside the gardens were some of the very first to be landscaped in Britain.

Harewood House located near Leeds is an award winning stately home featuring a number of exciting outdoor entertainments, special events and art exhibitions throughout the year. The house contains stunning interiors by Robert Adam, some fine Chippendale furniture, delicate porcelain and art by Italian Renaissance masterpieces and Turner watercolours. Outside you can find the Bird Garden and some fantastic views.

Ripley Castle found near Harrogate has a whole host of events to delight from carriage driving trials to classic car rally’s and country music festivals to Shakespearian plays. The house also contains armour from both sides of the Civil War.

Scampston Hall in Rillington is famed for its stunning walled garden, which is quite unlike any other walled garden you will see. The garden has received great acclaim since opening in 2004 and has attracted people from all over the world.

Temple Newsam House near Leeds was once owned by the Knights Templar and was the birth place of Lord Darnley the husband of Mary Queen of Scots and the father of James I of England. The grounds of the house were designed by the famous Capability Brown and the gardens contains the national plant collections of delphiniums, Phlox and Aster novi-belgii. Temple Newsam plays host to a number of events throughout the year.
