Beachy Head

Beachy Head is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain with view of the south east coast.  The popularity of this area which is near the town of Eastbourne can be contributed to its wonderful panoramic views, seen from the cliff top.  Unfortunately because of the height of the cliff it has gained notoriety as a suicide spot but with the establishment of a local chaplaincy service these occurrences have diminished greatly.  Looking out to the east of the cliff is a wonderful view of the beaches and the town of Eastbourne pier and harbor.  On a clear day the Dungeness in Kent, which is 40 miles away can be seen.  Looking to the west on a clear day the outline of the Isle of Wright, which is 70 miles away, can be seen.  There are a number of Rye accommodations and Rye Hotels in this area all offering excellent amenities.  Beachy Head is easily accessible by car or bus service which travels along the seafront.

A visit to Beachy Head and the nearby town of Eastbourne will afford the vacationer or week-end traveler many diverse events to enjoy throughout the year.

  • Magnificent Motors – a free event showcasing vintage and classic cars, motorbikes and other vehicles.  A French Market is also featured at this venue.
  • AEGON – International Tennis Tournament - held in Eastbourne in 2010 and remains on the international tennis calendar

Your visit to the Beachy Head area and the surrounding countryside will offer rustic charm and a healthy and relaxed setting. A whole selection of Rye accommodation is available. Whether you select one of the grand Rye hotels with magnificent ballrooms for your wedding or other event, or a local bed and breakfast along cobbled streets your leisure or business trip will be a trip into history.  This beautifully landscaped area has been described as “a little bit of the old world living in pleasant ignorance of the new” by a Victorian poet.
