This year on the 5th of November a unique and historic event will be happening in Ottery St. Mary in South Devon, Tar Barrel Rolling.

The Tar Barrel tradition is hundreds of years old and the West Country hosts many festivities which ranged from historical torchlight processions to burning barrels festivals throughout many of the local towns and villages. The Tar Barrel Rolling at Ottery St. Mary is one of these towns which still celebrate this tradition.

Origins of this event are unclear but theories range from, the gunpowder plot of 1605, attempts to ward off evil spirits, through to the signal to warn of the approaching Spanish Armada. Today this event includes other attractions from a funfair to a massive bonfire ignited on the banks of the River Otter.
