If you are planning a winter holiday or a weekend break down in the East Sussex and South Downs area, even though you might not realise it, you will be heading into English wine country. It is a unique area with its coastal proximity and the minerally chalky soil composition of the South Downs, making it the perfect spot for wine and in particular sparkling wine production.

The county of East Sussex has some of the best wine producers found on the British Isles, with of these vineyards produce some of the best Sparkling wine available outside the coveted region of Champagne in France.

So here are some vineyards to seek out whilst on your trip to East Sussex or look out for these vineyards Sparkling wines, as they are rather exceptional and perfect fizz for the festive season or to bring in the New Year with.

One of the first vineyards to check out is the award winning “Breaky Bottom vineyard”, a long established wine producer and offer a superb range of sparkling wine. Breaky Bottom vineyard uses the ‘traditional method’ (bottle fermentation and extended bottle maturation) which gives their wines fresh subtle flavours and aromas, with an elegant feel.

Another notable vineyard is Ridgeview at Burgess Hill; they offer a choice of multi-award winning sparkling wines. Ridgeview also make their sparkling wines using the ‘traditional method’ but use the three traditional Champagne grapes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot which are grown on their vines.
