Edinburgh hotels - The National Museum of Scotland

Two Edinburgh museums are in the running for a coveted award, it has been revealed.

The National Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery are competing against eight other museums in the country for the 2012 Art Fund Prize, otherwise known as museum of the year award.

Winners will receive £100,000 from the award, which is considered by many to be the biggest accolade for arts and cultural organisations in the UK.

Both museums have had significant refurbishment in recent times, with the National Museum of Scotland reopening in July following a £47.4 million redevelopment whilst the Scottish National Portrait Gallery also underwent a £17.6 million makeover.

They have been received positively thus far, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world, adding to the already vibrant, cultural Scottish capital.

Should you wish to stay in one of the fine Edinburgh hotels for a city break any time soon, be sure to drop by one of these brilliant museums, the perfect recipe for those culture vultures out there.
