Popular, historic visitor site Gilmerton Cove in Edinburgh has been voted one of the best tourist attractions inScotland, beating the city’s castle, zoo and the National Museum of Scotland in a survey.

According to a review website, which detailed a list of Things To Do in Edinburgh, the hand carved tunnels finished top. The news comes at a great time for attractions in Edinburgh, which have been going through something of a purple patch in recent years.

Opened 10 years ago after a £100,000 restoration project, the attraction consists of a 40ft corridor with rooms off either side, although there are more tunnels yet to be discovered. The origins of the tunnels remain a mystery, with some speculating they were used as a drinking den for 18th Century gentry, a lair inhabited by Knights Templar or a refuge for Covenanters fleeing prosecution.

It could be the ideal day out to enjoy whilst embarking on a short break to one of the fantastic hotels in Edinburgh this year.
