The stunning Spanish city of Barcelona is fighting tooth and nail to host the opening stages of the 2016 Tour de France cycle race, after five venues confirmed their intentions to compete for the competition’s starting berth.

The Catalonian capital will have to see off competition from Yorkshire, Venice, Berlin and Scotland if it is to triumph in its bid to host the iconic competition.

Should the city’s application prove successful, it is hoped there will be a vital boost to the local economy, whilst raising the profile of this spectacular European location even further.

The Tour de France is an annual three-week race held in France and the surrounding countries, with the first two days of racing, or the ‘Grand Depart’, held in a new location outside of the host nation every two years.

Why not enjoy a Tour de France style cycle around the Catalonian capital whilst on a break in one of the fine Barcelona hotels the perfect base for a European city break?
