The Forth Bridge to prepare bid for world heritage statusOne of Scotland’s most famous landmarks, the Forth Bridge, is to bid for world heritage status, after becoming one of two UK sites chosen to put forward nominations to UNESCO for consideration.

A group called the Forth Bridges Forum have been instructed to put together a bid in time for 2014, and will not know if their attempt has been successful until the following year after it has gone through a ‘demanding 18 month process of scrutiny and evaluation’ by UNESCO and its advisory body, the International Council of Monuments and Sites.

Scottish Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: ‘The Forth Bridge is a Scottish icon that is recognised the world over. We are extremely excited that we have the opportunity to make the case for the bridge being inscribed as Scotland’s sixth World Heritage Site.’

Connecting the Scottish capital with Fife, the Forth Bridge is just one many fantastic landmarks dotted around the city. Why not check it out for yourself whilst enjoying a relaxing break in one of the fine hotels in Edinburgh?
