Asiatic lionMove over pandas Tian Tian and Yang Guang, there’s a new hot couple at Edinburgh Zoo.

The attraction’s Asiatic lioness Kamlesh has been introduced to new arrival Jayendra, a lion 13 years younger, with keepers hopeful the rare duo will become a breeding pair and ‘produce cubs in the not-too-distant future’.

But if the two are to get together, Jayendra has some growing up to do, with Kamlesh clearly ‘the boss in the relationship’ according to Alison Maclean, head carnivore keeper at Edinburgh Zoo, although this will change when Jayendra gets a bit older and reaches sexual maturity.

One of only seven subspecies of lions, Asiatic lions are critically endangered and can only be found in the Gir Forest National Park in India, with only 175 thought to be left in the wild.

They form part of a broad range of animals on show at Edinburgh Zoo, which is a great day out for the whole family. Be sure to drop by whilst enjoying a break in one of the fine hotels in Edinburgh this year.
