A spookier side to Paris’ past, which has largely remained unexplored by the thousands of tourists who flock to the French capital every year, lies underneath the city.

The Paris Catacombs, also referred to as France’s Empire of the Dead, are a 200-mile network of old caves, tunnels and quarries, with much of it filled with the skulls and bones of the deceased.

Used as a solution to overcrowding in the city’s cemeteries during the 18th century, the Catacombs are largely out-of-bounds to the public, although a small section has been made available which can be found off Place Denfert-Rochereau in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, near the Montparnasse district.

Be sure to get a fascinating and spooky glimpse into the French capital’s rich history whilst enjoying a break in one of the fine Paris hotels.
