Edinburgh could host beginning of Tour de France in 2014The Scottish capital’s bid to host the beginning of the Tour de France is close to gaining the approval of race organisers in Paris, according to reports.

Cycling’s greatest race, which was won by British cycling hero Bradley Wiggins this year, is ready to return to Britain perhaps as early as 2014, or failing that, the following year.

Edinburgh is battling with Yorkshire to host the iconic ‘Grand Départ’, and the city’s bid to the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) has been quoted as being ‘a very positive and well thought of bid’ by Brian Cookson, the president of British cycling.

Should the city succeed in its bid to host the event, it would represent a major coup, with the event being a real draw for tourists across the world. Cycling fans could combine the ’Grand Départ’ with a cultural break in one of the excellent Edinburgh hotels in 2014 or 2015.
