Scarborough is one of the many fascinating areas in North Yorkshire which is frequently visited by those staying in hotels in Whitby, and now the University of Hull believes that there could soon be another great reason to visit Scarborough.

A report from the university concludes that the town would be able to support and run a major new maritime history centre within the coming four years. Already in place is The Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre which began 6 years ago and is currently run by volunteers, and following this report, plans may soon be put in place to expand the centre.

The report considered the possibility for a centre that is open 5 days per week and both exhibits and preserves the maritime history of Scarborough, fromYorkshirecoble fishing boats to the bombardment of German cruisers in1914. Inorder to achieve this, other organisations and the local authority would partner up with the maritime centre to keep the project sustainable.

The creation of a large-scale centre would certainly be a fantastic addition to Scarborough and is a great opportunity to present an interesting part of the town’s history to visitors staying in Whitby hotels in Yorkshire, but in the meantime, the current Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre has plenty to show. The website for the centre was voted theUK’s best maritime family history resource by the magazine ‘Who do you think you are?’, and it has won the local council’s community award for artistic and cultural development for the last 3 years in a row.
