Revellers are preparing for a post Christmas break in one of the excellent hotels in Barcelona next month, combining it with when the Catalonian capital’s big blow out winter festival takes place. The cathedral crypt at Ajuntament in Barcelona

Designed in honour of Santa Eulàlia – a 13-year-old Roman Christian virgin who suffered martyrdom in Barcelona during the persecution of Christians in the reign of Emperor Diocletian – the festival takes over this sensational European city and kicks off with a ceremony in Plaça Sant Jaume.

This is followed by music, sardanes and parades, whilst choral concerts will be held in churches and cathedrals across the city.

The cathedral crypt – where she is buried – and the Ajuntament de Barcelona are free and open to the public, along with more than 30 museums.

Just one of many excellent cultural events and festivals taking place in Barcelona over the course of 2013, it is little wonder why this beautiful European city has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world.
