Dublin to host stage of the Giro d'Italia cycling raceThe Irish capital is to host one of the three opening stages of the Giro d’Italia professional cycling race next year, as tourism bosses in the country eye a €50 million windfall from the prestigious event.

The Grand Partenza – otherwise known as the Big Start – will kick off in Belfast in May 2014 before further stages take place in Armagh city and Dublin before the 200 cyclists and support teams fly back to Italy for the rest of the three week event.

Alongside vast amounts of revenue for the local economy, it is hoped staging the event will have long-term benefits as a result of Dublin’s added exposure to a global audience of 800 million across 165 countries.

It could be a great event to watch for any of those enjoying a break in one of the excellent hotels in Dublin next spring, although there is plenty going on in and around the city to keep you entertained if you fancy a holiday over the coming months.
