Whitby is a fantastic place to visit throughout the year, standing as a fine example of the Great British holiday experience thanks to its sublime seaside stretches. As well as offering an unforgettable day at the beach, those staying in a Whitby hotel throughout the year can enjoy a superb range of festivals – these are just some of the best.
We begin with the Whitby Goth Weekend, an event which has grown from strength to strength since first being organised back in 1994 and is now considered to be one of the biggest celebrations of its kind in the world. With a charity football match between Goths and a local newspaper, craft-markets, sand-castle building and plenty of music events, the Goth Weekend usually takes place during the last weekends April and October, with the majority of fun to be found at the Whitby Spa Pavilion. It’s a great way to explore Whitby’s association with Dracula.
Another popular event is the Whitby Live 60s Festival, perfect for music fans who want to relive the tunes of the decade. Running for two weekends during June, Herman’s Hermits, Ivy League and the Persuaders are just some of the acts that have previously featured. Expect to hear renditions of hits by artists such as the Beatles, The Shadows, Elvis Presley, and Cliff Richard.
The town’s regatta always promises to be a big hit with those staying in any of the Whitby or Scarborough hotels during August and offers a lively maritime celebration which can be enjoyed free of charge. One of the oldest in England, over 20,000 people are usually in attendance for the Whitby Challenge Cup alone, the centre piece of the proceedings in the Regatta. Other features include a sea rescue demonstration, live music and a 4k fun run.
