The SAS Visit Woolacombe

My title sounds a little more ominous then it is, when I mention the SAS I am of course referring to Surfers Against Sewage. The non profit pressure group who are focussed on preserving and conserving the UK’s oceans and beaches have initiated a national beach cleaning tour and have chosen to start the scheme in Devon.

The first beach that was chosen to be cleaned was Woolacombe beach in North Devon. Even though the beach currently holds the ‘England for Excellence Gold Award’ for family holidays and was also voted Best British Beach by the Mail on Sunday the event is being heralded as a great way to raise awareness of the group’s ideas and principles.

People travelled from as far afield as Birmingham to form a team of over fifty people; by the end of the day over 250kg of rubbish including random items such as toys and car parts were collected. The scheme has also been endorsed by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic committee who have chosen to award the project the Inspire Mark for its work.

Woolacombe has an immensely clean beach and coastline and organisers have stated that much of the cleanup operation is aimed towards making users of the sea more aware of the perils of leaving litter such as disposable barbecues behind when they leave.

As you can imagine the beach is hugely popular with visitors and this publicity is bound to highlight the wonders of the beach resort even more. Owners of Woolacombe hotels report each and every year about their increases of visitor staying in their Woolacombe accommodation.

A song for Bath

Are you a songwriter, singer or performer that lives in or near the city of Bath? If your answer is yes then now is the time to use your skills to come up with a piece of music that sums up the city of Baths spirit. The competition taking place this year is called ‘The Song for Bath’ and is being run in collaboration with numerous organisations such as bath council and future Plus Bath.

The people behind the idea are hoping that it will encourage individuals to write a piece of music that is not only unique but exciting and really depicts the wonders of the city.

The prize for the best song will scoop a cash prize of £1000 and runners up will receive awards of £500 and £250. There is also a special reward for the person that the judges decide shows the most promise. One lucky person will be able to have a one to one musical workshop with a music tutor from Bath University and will also get the chance to record their song professionally with the use of a producer and session musicians.

A variety of judges will be deciding upon the winner including international Jazz singer Clare Teal, Joe Bennett who heads the School of music and performing arts departments at Bath Spa University and Jason Thornton the musical director of the Bath Royal Philharmonic amongst others. As you can see they represent a wide genre of musical styles and will have a very tough decision to make.

So what are you waiting for? Its time to get writing that perfect song about anything related to the city, maybe even about the great Hotels Bath and Accommodation in Bath.

Scarborough harbour is one of the most popular destinations for people staying in a Scarborough hotel. The harbours central location, great shops, fantastic restaurants and stunning views make it ‘The Jewel in the Crown’ of Scarborough.

The Seaside town of Scarborough has been a popular tourist spot since the Victorian era with thousands flocking to the town to enjoy its many attractions including its castle which sits atop the hill dominating the area.

The harbour was created by three piers in the sheltered South Bay under Castle Headland. The harbour no longer accepts cargo ships; instead it is home to leisure craft, some of which even offer boat tours of the North Yorkshire coastline.

Beautiful Beachy Head

Beachy Head

Beachy Head is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain with view of the south east coast.  The popularity of this area which is near the town of Eastbourne can be contributed to its wonderful panoramic views, seen from the cliff top.  Unfortunately because of the height of the cliff it has gained notoriety as a suicide spot but with the establishment of a local chaplaincy service these occurrences have diminished greatly.  Looking out to the east of the cliff is a wonderful view of the beaches and the town of Eastbourne pier and harbor.  On a clear day the Dungeness in Kent, which is 40 miles away can be seen.  Looking to the west on a clear day the outline of the Isle of Wright, which is 70 miles away, can be seen.  There are a number of Rye accommodations and Rye Hotels in this area all offering excellent amenities.  Beachy Head is easily accessible by car or bus service which travels along the seafront.

A visit to Beachy Head and the nearby town of Eastbourne will afford the vacationer or week-end traveler many diverse events to enjoy throughout the year.

  • Magnificent Motors – a free event showcasing vintage and classic cars, motorbikes and other vehicles.  A French Market is also featured at this venue.
  • AEGON – International Tennis Tournament - held in Eastbourne in 2010 and remains on the international tennis calendar
  • Concerts/Events - Starting in May and running until September many artist and other attractions perform live and outdoors.
  • Emergency Services Display - the largest display of emergency services in the UK – a free event
  • Motor Show – new vehicles, cars, commercial vehicles and motor homes on display

There are many other events including a free seafront air show, RNLI ( Royal National Lifeboat Institution -  charity that saves lives at sea in costal Great Britain) regatta yacht and boat event, a Victorian Fest in September and Beer Fest in October.

Your visit to the Beachy Head area and the surrounding countryside will offer rustic charm and a healthy and relaxed setting. A whole selection of Rye accommodation is available. Whether you select one of the grand Rye hotels with magnificent ballrooms for your wedding or other event, or a local bed and breakfast along cobbled streets your leisure or business trip will be a trip into history.  This beautifully landscaped area has been described as “a little bit of the old world living in pleasant ignorance of the new” by a Victorian poet.
