Having a Relaxing Spa Break in the city of Bath

Roman Baths By Martin Pettitt

Historical Roman Spa Baths in Bath

The historic and picturesque Somerset city of Bath has a synonymous connection with many periods of history which span 100’s of years. The most notable influence was the occupation by the Roman Empire from around 60AD, when the Romans discovered the famous hot spa water, fed by the area’s underground hot springs.

Previously these underground hot spring mineral waters were treated as a shrine by the Iron Age Britons, but when the Romans arrived they quickly established this area as a warm source of water for bathing. It was also around this time when the Romans decided to build a Bath House on top of the natural geothermal mineral spring waters to harness this resource. These Roman Baths can still be seen today and has been extremely well preserved for visitors to witness. Bath was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

These “Bath springs” are the warmest geothermal springs found in the British Isles. After the Roman period the city saw later development of Bath as the country’s leading eighteenth and early nineteenth century health resort.

Today in complete contrast to the Romans Baths, you can also visit the “Thermae Bath Spa” next door to the ancient Roman Baths. This is a mixture architecture where the contemporary building spa building meets the historical spa. The Thermae Bath Spa offers visitors a relaxing ambient and therapeutic Spa experience, with many therapies on offer. Venturing up onto the rooftop, you will find large spa pool, from which you can view beautiful panoramic landscape of the city and overlook its Georgian architecture, which is in abundance.

Bath Unveils New Cycle Scheme

Bath and its affluent city centre brimming with Roman history, the city of Bath has always been a favourite with tourists; with thousands flocking here every year. One of the best ways to get around in the hectic streets is to use a bicycle, allowing you to navigate around quickly reaching your chosen destination.

The city, together with the help of the North Somerset council, has launched the trial of a revolutionary method of hiring bicycles. Being tested from the 26th September for 10 months, the system works by using a specially designed smart card, purchased various city tourism sites, to release a bicycle from any of the 4 designated stations around the city. How much time you can spend on your bike is dependent on how much you pay. The system is already being operated in other cities such as Turin and Rome with both being a success.

The project is part of the “European CIVITAS renaissance” project, 5 year programme aiming to test out innovations in urban transport. Bath is one of cities that include Perugia (Italy), Skopje (Macedonia), Szczecinek (Poland) and Gorna Oryahovista (Bulgaria) that are taking part in the project.

It gives the city a modern transformation on the traditional method of cycle hire, this way means people can simply pick up a bike whenever they want from which every area of the city they are currently in. The service, costing just £1 for the first hour, also allows users to take the bicycles back to which ever station convenient to them. This results in a reliable, quick and very cost effective method of transport.

If you’re looking to visit the city to visit many of the local attractions or enjoy maybe enjoy one of the Bath Spa Breaks, plus looking for Hotels Bath with a central location for accommodation, then look no further.

As a city Bath is relatively small as cities go, fortunately for visitors the key places to see and the cities highlighted attractions are mostly in and around the city centre, so that makes more easily accessible on foot or a short bus ride for the less energetic. I’m sure the first on most peoples visit list is the “Roman Baths” in the city centre here you can go back in time and get a feel for a place that was in regular use by its local Roman residents.

Adjacent to the Roman Bath’s is the beautiful Georgian “Grand Pump Room”, which allows visitors to experience and sample the same water that fills its neighbouring Roman building. In modern times currently you can enjoy locally prepared produce in the buildings restaurant, whilst listening to the relaxing music of the resident musical ensemble.

The other iconic place from Bath that must be on your list is the famous “The Royal Crescent” that takes part of its name “crescent” as it is shaped as its namesake and over looks the lovely Royal Victoria Park. This is just a taste of what the City of Bath has to offer, why not explore more of the sights when you take your next stay at a Bath Hotel.

Baths Royal Connections

Baths connection to Royalty stretches back right throughout the history of the city. The city’s very founding was made by an ancient king of Britain. Legend says that around 500BC Prince Bladud found the healing waters of Bath after being exiled for having Leprosy. The waters cured the young prince’s disease and he was able to return to his family. Later when the prince became King he founded the city of Bath in gratitude to these special waters. Today a statue of King Bladud stands in the Royal Baths at the Roman Baths and many fantastic paintings and illustrations telling the story can be found in the Pump Room

Many hundreds of years later King Edgar, regarded as the first King of England, held his coronation at Bath Abbey in 973AD. This service forms the basis for the current coronation ceremony. You can see a depiction of this ceremony in the Edgar Window at the east end of Bath Abbey. Also in the Abbey you will find a commemorative stone which celebrates Queen Elizabeth II visit in 1973 to mark 1000 years since the crowning of Edgar and the formation of the English Monarchy.

In 1688 Queen Anne visited the city to bathe in the thermal waters in order to cure her gout. After her visit the city became hugely popular with high society and helped transform Bath in to the grand World Heritage Site it is today.

In 1830 a young Princess Victoria, who would later become Queen Victoria, visited the city with her mother to attend the opening of the park named after her. Today you can stay in the very same Bath Hotel as they did, The Royal Hotel, which has a special plaque commemorating her visit.

Even in the 21st century royals are still flocking to Bath. Recently the Prince of Wales visited the city to open his Highgrove Shop, which sells products grown and made on his estate of Highgrove in the Cotswolds.
